Broadcast & The Focus Group - "The Be Colony" (Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age 2009)

Broadcast's "The Noise Made By People" is definitely one of my favorite psych-pop records. The Focus Group's "We Are All Pan's People" is one of the most interesting ambient/electronic records I have ever heard. Until recently I had no idea that the two groups were even affiliated with each other. Luckily, I came across the wonderfully beautiful and complex "Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age."

After some research, I discovered that longtime friend Julian House (of The Focus Group) has been part of the artistic direction of almost every Broadcast record to date. Finally, it seems, the two groups have found a project to more thoroughly collaborate upon. The record is a constant push and pull between the accessibility of Broadcast's melodic pop and The Focus Groups ambient sound collages, resulting in something truly captivating and beautiful. Its almost as if someone took the most interesting elements of 60s psychedelic pop and jazz, cut them to pieces, and carefully placed them back together into something I could have never expected.

Its hard to describe really.
Just pick up the record and listen.

ps. -Broadcast & The Focus Group open for Atlas Sound at the Paradise in Boston October 22. :)
